Stylish standout: Mini skirt voted most iconic fashion trend of all-time

NEW YORK — Whether you’re a t-shirt-and-jeans type of person or someone who only wears designer labels, everyone has their own sense of style. There have been plenty of memorable fashion trends over the years, but a new poll reveals the one item that’s simply unforgettable.

The survey of 2,000 people in the United Kingdom names the mini skirt as the most iconic fashion trend in history. Researchers, commissioned by Samsung, say the revolutionary skirt beat out the “little black dress” and hot pants for the crown as fashion’s greatest garment. British designer Mary Quant has been widely credited as one of the creators of the modern mini skirt of the 1960s.

Other fashion favorites

Also making history’s top 10 wardrobe items were the denim jacket (4th), the classic leather biker jacket (7th), and skinny jeans (10th). One thing many people agree on is today’s trends aren’t very trendy. Forty percent of respondents say they think today’s styles are just a collection of old fads making a comeback.

“Our study just goes to show that there are many memorable trends from over the years, and as a result people are hanging on to items they perceive to be classics, while also investing in vintage finds,” Samsung vice president of home appliances Dan Harvie says in a statement.

Among those classics fashionistas keep on hand, a quarter of women surveyed say they favor wearing the little black dress. One in 10 adults have a trusty leather jacket in their closet.

When it comes to everyday fashion, the survey found that a plain t-shirt and sneakers is one of the most common combos around. For the winter months, one in 10 say a designer coat is the most important item to own. Nearly half of the poll enjoys wearing a nice coat because it’s a good fit and they “go with everything.”

An Oldie But A Goodie

Researchers say when someone finds that perfect shirt, it stays in their wardrobe for a long, long time. Respondents reported holding onto their favorite garments for an average of 12 years. Twenty-two percent of the poll said they had something in their closet for more than 20 years.

“This is great for sustainable fashion but often these clothes need to be cared for properly to protect them for the future,” Harvie adds. “We all have that favorite item we wished would last us a lifetime, but it’s not that easy.”

Nearly three in 10 people say they’d avoid wearing their fashion classics too often if it means keeping them around longer — or perhaps until they become trendy once again.
