NEW YORK — Being honest, open, and transparent is important in any relationship, but what about when it comes to airing your dirtiest secrets? It’s natural to be curious about a partner’s past, but a new survey finds many people struggle dishing the details from their own rap sheets.
According to the survey of 2,000 American adults commissioned by sex toy retailer EdenFantasies, one in three have lied to a romantic partner about their sexual history. When broken down by gender, 37% of men admit they weren’t always truthful, while a quarter of women say the same.
But who really even wants to know about their partner’s sexual escapades? It seems the respondents were split nearly down the middle on the question. Fifty-three percent said they want to know every last detail of their significant other’s history, while 18% don’t want to know anything at all. A third admitted that hearing about previous bedroom partners made them jealous.
“Your partner’s past is a taboo and often divisive topic,” says Fred Petrenko, an EdenFantasys spokesperson, in a release. “Our study showed that [people] will actually congratulate and even high-five their partner after they learn how many people their partner has been with, but a sizable portion doesn’t want to know anything and even get upset when they find out.”
In fact, some get so upset, they call it quits. One in five people said they actually ended the relationship after their partner revealed prior hookups.
Still, whether or not they find out the truth, the majority (76%) of survey respondents said they are curious about the truth. For 16% though, it’s simply not discussed at all.
In case you’re wondering, the survey found the average number of past partners for men was 13, compared to 9 for women.
